AbilityOne

The AbilityOne (formerly JWOD) program’s mission is to create employment for people who are blind or have severe disabilities to fulfill their potential, while delivering a wide array of products and solutions to the federal government.

In the United States, seven out of ten people who are blind are not employed. Created in 1938 and amended in 1971, the Javits-Wagner O’Day (JWOD) Act; a federal procurement program that allows for the provision of products and services to the federal government; requires government agencies to purchase selected products and services from non-profit agencies such as ours.

The AbilityOne Program is administered by the Committee for Purchase from People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled. Two national independent organizations, National Industries for the Blind (NIB) and National Industries for the Severely Handicapped (NISH), help state and private non-profit agencies participate in the AbilityOne Program.
